The Q&A Archives: Chinese wisteria

Question: I was planning on planting a few Wisteria vines on one side of my property that is always in the shade. Do you think they can survive?

Answer: Chinese wisteria will grow in full to partial sun, but not in full shade. It simply won't flower for you. How about planting the shade-loving Trachelospermum jasminoides (Confederate Jasmine or Star Jasmine)? This is a very fragrant evergreen climber producing clusters of 1" white flowers in mid-summer. Dark green glossy foliage adorns this twining climber.
