The Q&A Archives: Winter preparation for hardy banana

Question: I purchased a

Answer: Doug,

It is normal for a banana to die to the ground and then resprout in spring. The one's called "hardy" are a little better able to survive through a colder winter but they too die back in winter. Continue to mulch the plant and after a hard freeze you can cut the top part back to near the ground if you like.

It will fruit if the top parts are not killed back but this is unlikely in your northern location. The fruit is small and seedy anyway and not worth hoping for. Banana plants do not require another variety for pollination.
