The Q&A Archives: How do you trim a Blue Point Juniper?

Question: I am having trouble with my Blue Point Juniper? I don't know how to trim it to look like it should. Can you tell me how to do it, or send me any suggestions.

Answer: It's hard to answer this kind of question long distance because I can't see the plant. (Unfortunately we are unable to accept photos through this email Q&A service.)This juniper, Juniperus chinensis `Blue Point`, has a very regular natural shape without pruning or shearing. So I am not sure why you are wanting to trim it. Generally speaking it will have the most symmetrical shape if grown in full sun and allowed to develop naturally. If this is a young plant, you might want to check with your retailer and/or county extension to try to determine if you need to do anything to it to help it along, or just wait and let it grow out naturally. It should eventually be about 12 feet tall and 8 feet wide in a broad pyramid shape. I hope this helps.
