I live in Chicago and the temperature is in the 50's. Is it to early to dig up the dahlias and dry them out or doIi have to wait till the temps drop to a frost?

It's best to wait until a frost kills the tops of your dahlias before digging them up for storage. A frost will trigger your plants into dormancy. Although it is sometimes difficult to wait for Mother Nature to give your plants the message that it's time to rest, it's best to wait.
