I am thinking about planting a Royal Purple Smoke Tree about 5' away from my house. I have an older home with a stone foundation. Will this be too close to my house? My house faces east and this area is exposed to full sun. The reason for this tree would be to shade the front windows and give some height to my A-Frame house.

Cotinus coggygris grows about 15 feet tall and 10 to 12 feet wide. In order to allow it the best air circulation I would suggest moving it a little further away. Roots tend to extend well beyond the branch spread. In general they should not be a problem unless there are existing imperfections in the foundation or underground utilities -- roots can find these and make them worse. Enjoy your smoke tree!
