I am looking for the name of a pine tree we had in our garden when I was growing up. It was about 5 feet tall and had a twisted trunk with several clumps of long needles. Do you know what kind of tree it was?

There are a number of conifers that fit that description! Pinus contorta var. latifolia, a dwarf Lodgepole pine, is one possiblility; Pinus muricata and Pinus sylvestris 'Contorta' (Scotch Pine) both have trunks and branches that are twisted and gnarled. Hope one of these is the tree of your childhood!
