Late winter and early spring are the best times to prune your shrubs. In December you should either strip the leaves off your rose canes or prune the canes back in anticipation of new growth; hibiscus will rest until March before beginning new growth so prune it back in late February or early March. Hydrangea's can be pruned when the leaf buds begin to swell in the early spring.
