The Q&A Archives: When to plant pods?

Question: I have some pods from a flowering vine. When should they be planted & should they be taken out of their

Answer: The answer to your question really depends upon the type of plant you're collecting the seeds from. If it is an annual vine, wait until next spring to plant the seeds.

In general terms, seed pods should be allowed to ripen on the plant. When they turn from green to tan, they can be harvested. If there are many seeds in the pod (such as peas or beans), you can break open the pod and plant the individual seeds (leave any outer coating on the seed). Plant them no deeper than twice their width. Hope this answers your question!
