When the flowering has finished, cut the shrubs back by one-third. Or, you can prune back severely in the late fall and the following spring, new flowering shoots will appear. To renovate your butterfly bushes, cut them back hard now. Then next year, after they've finished blooming, cut them back again. This will renew the shrubs, remove the leggy appearance, and encourage the development of healthy new growth.
