| How and when you trim really depends upon what type of ornamental grass you're growing. If it is pampas grass, early spring is the best time and it can be pruned all the way down to the ground. Other ornamental grasses can be groomed in the spring by simply pulling up the old foliage (almost combing the plant with your fingers). Some ornamental grasses can be cut down to ground level in the fall.
