The Q&A Archives: Sedge - carex buchananii

Question: Do I need to cut back this plant before winter in spring or any time?

Answer: This plant is essentially an evergreen. In the spring, if there is severe winter damage and discoloration, you may need to trim it back to remove that. This fall, mulch heavily over the root area once there has been some freezing weather but don't trim it back now.
