My vine maple does not display fall colors; instead the leaves curl and then turn brown.

Although vine maples are generally pretty reliable in producing brilliant fall color, weather and light are the keys to the color changes in the leaves. The best fall color is made when there are clear cold days and colder nights. If the days are overcast or the day and night temperatures are similar, there will be little or no fall color. This is why some years there are spectacular fall colors and other years very little color. Hope this clarifies things for you.
