The Q&A Archives: Brown Turkey Figs Won't Ripen

Question: I purchased a Brown Turkey Fig tree and I have a ton of figs, but they will not ripen. Aren't they supposed to turn red? They are still green and hard. Help. I paid a lot of money for this tree.

Answer: Figs need a long, warm summer season to mature. In your growing region, late frosts can affect fruit production. Some years the fruits will not have enough time to ripen; other years you'll have a huge harvest. It's just the nature of this heat loving tree. In Hawaii, young Brown Turkey Fig trees will produce 180-360 figs a year. In New Jersey, the trees will still set fruit, but the fruit may not ripen. Best wishes next year!
