The Q&A Archives: Mexican Fam Palm

Question: How large can the root system get on a Washingtonia Robusta, Mexican
Fam Palm? I am planting near a septic tank. Will the roots interfer with the septic system?

Answer: Palm trees typically have root systems that grow down rather than out. Usually they remain with two feet of the trunk and venture down 3-4 feet. I can't say whether or not the roots will interfere with your septic system - it depends upon how close you plant your palm. Best wishes with your garden!
