The Q&A Archives: Indoor Care for Fern

Question: What is the best way to care for an indoor fern, in terms of light levels and watering? The leaves are starting to turn brown and it's not looking very healthy. I water it once a week but it seems to be getting worse.

Answer: Most indoor ferns like high humidity levels. If it's practical, try hanging your fern in a bright spot in your bathroom--it will enjoy the steam from the shower!

Fern houseplants like medium to high light, but not too much direct sun. Keep thesoil evenly moist--if the plant is in a bright and/or warm spot, it may need more frequent watering than your weekly schedule. Check the soil every few days, and water as necessary to keep the soil moist but not saturated. Make sure your fern is growing in a light, well-drained potting mix and the planter has drainage holes.
