The Q&A Archives: Lilacs

Question: Is there any variety of lilac that will grow in Texas - specifically, Washington/Chappell Hill area of Washington County, TX. Thanks,

Answer: Janie,

Unfortunately lilacs suffer that far south and are poorly adapted. As an alternative shrub you might consider crape myrtle (pretty but lacks the fragrance) or Buddlea davidii (pretty and fragrant).
