I live on Long Island, zone7, and I need help in deciding what type of greenhouse I need and plans on how to build it. Any help will be greatly apreciated. |
There are lots of things to take into consideration. Do you want the greenhouse to be attached to your house, or free-standing? If it's attached to your house, do you want it an integral part of a room, or do you want a wall there and just a door into the greenhouse? Think about how you will use your greenhouse. Do you want to be able to use it year-round? Are you willing to trek out to a free-standing greenhouse in the middle of winter to tend to the plants? (Remember that you will need a reliable heat source.) Or would you like it as an addition to your house, so you can sit out there on a sunny winter morning? I recommend you get a good reference book--your bookstore or library may have a selection, or be able to order one for you. One good one is "Greenhouse Gardener's Companion", by Shane Smith (Fulcrum Publishing, Golden, CO 1992, ISBN 1-55591-106-4). It discusses the various greenhouse options, watering and ventilation, planting schedules, and much more. Once you decide on the type, check out Burpee's greenhouse kits! |
