| When do you need to prune this tree or should it be pruned at all? Right now it is about 3 feet tall and was just bought last week. We are going to plant in the gound in the next few weeks so when would we need to fertilize it. And how many hours of full sun would be required for this plant to do well. |
| Darlene, It should not need pruning at all. Snipping a shoot that is growing out of bounds for the desired plant shape is fine but usually not needed. Wait until early spring to fertilize. Apply 1 cup of a turf fertilizer with about 15% nitrogen in an 8 foot diameter circular area around the tree. Repeat in mid to late spring and again in early to mid summer. Each time water the fertilizer in after planting. For the first few years maintain a 2 inch layer of mulch on the surface of the soil in an area extending twice the branch spread of the tree.
