The Q&A Archives: Trim or not to trim

Question: My Pocomoke Crape Myrtles were damaged by frost. Do I trim them back for the winter. Will they come back in the spring after being damaged by frost.
Thank you
Shirleene Sears

Answer: Shirleene,

They will most likely be fine. Wait to trim them until late winter. Then only trim as needed to remove dead wood. They should reemerge in spring with the arrival of warm weather. In the future avoid fertilizing after about early August and providing extra watering in early fall. Such practices can promote late season growth which is susceptible to damage from an early frost.
