Is the Mimosa tree related to the Acacia Tree? I recently found out that I am alergic to the Acacia. I have what I think is an Acacia tree in my yard - but also have a Mimosa. I pictures I see online of the Acacia also look like the Mimosa. I really like the Mimosa (although it is messy). I still do not want to cut it down if not necessary. Thanks for your help.

The genus Acacia includes about 800 species, which are mostly tropical shrubs and trees. The genus is very similar to the genus Mimosa, with many species having been reassigned from one genus to the other, creating synonomous epithets. Both Acacia and Mimosa are members of the Leguminosae family, which makes them related. Whether or not you need to cut your trees down will depend upon what parts of the trees (flowers, leaves, etc.) causes allergic reactions.
