| I live in Zone 8b (Mandeville, LA) and I am trying to replace a tree (Bradford Pear) destroyed by hurricane Katrina. I have considered Magnolias, Live Oaks and Bradford Pears. Which tree would be best to plant in the month of November and will grow strong quickly? |
| Jason, All trees are best planted in November (or the fall in general). Bradfords grow quickly but tend to lose shape later in life and are prone to limb breakage at that time. Live oaks grow slow and get very large, shading the ground so much it is difficult to grow many things around them. Magnolias also cast a very dense shade. I might consider the 'Little Gem' magnolia, a dwarf variety that is very attractive but not so large as to consume the landscape. Thanks for the question. Please stop in again soon! |
