How can I plant sod to start a new lawn?

I would suggest you wait until spring to establish new turf. You can do a soil test now to see if you need to add nutrients to your lawn area. Your County Extension Office can assist you with the soil testing procedure and with recommendations for nutrients needed after the results are in. They can also provide information on turf species for your area.

In spring (about April) you should kill the weeds first with a product such as Roundup. Give it a week or two to work and then spread the nutrients as per your soil test report and rototill the area. Wait a few days and then lay the sod. Press it frimly to the soil with a sod roller (available from most rental centers) and water it well as you lay it down. Water daily for a week and then every 2 or three days for another week.
