Answer: Don't prune the canes until after they have gone dormant. In areas with severe winters, it's a good idea to lay the rose canes on the ground and cover them with soil. If winter temperatures don't go below about 10 degrees below zero, you may be able to get away with simply mounding soil over the base of the plants. My map places you in zone 5, but to be on the safe side, you may want to bury the entire plant, including canes.
