| Hello! We have 6 Cordyline Indivisa's in whiskey barrels that line our driveway. We normally treat them as annuals and throw them away each winter, then purchase new ones in the Spring. We decided to try and winter them last year, so we transplanted each one into a more portable pot, brought them inside, and supplied them with lots of light. They wintered very well inside. We transplanted them back into the barrels this Spring, and they have now tripled in size! We want to winter them again in the house, but they are so huge that I don't think I have room for 6 big pots, plus a window seat for each! I realize we live in Minnesota (zone 4), but is there any other way we can winter them? We don't have a greenhouse, but we do have heated garages, however they would have no access to any kind of light. Any ideas? Thanks for listening! Jen Peterson |
| Light is crucial to keeping your plants alive over the winter months. If you have no room indoors, you can try the heated garage, but you'll want to invest in some artificial light sources. Regular fluorescent shop lights will provide adequate light at a minimal expense. You may need to purchase several banks of lights to ensure each plant gets its share of illumination. Hang the fixtures 12-18" above the tops of the plants and keep the lights on 14-16 hours per day. Best wishes with your plants! |
