Can a magnolia tree be started from the red seeds in the pods that are left behind after the blossoms die off? I f so how? |
Robin, Yes you can start southern magnolias from seed. Remove the thin seed coat and wash away any fleshy pulp around the seeds. Soak seeds overnight in water at room temperature. Mix moist seeds with l to 3 times their volume of moist sand and/or peat moss and placed in a thin (not freezer type) polyethylene bag. Place the bag in the refrigerator. Check the mix in the bags periodically and if dry remoisten it. Leave the bag in the refrigerator for 3 months. Then remove the bags and plant the seeds immediately after removal from refrigeration. Thanks for the question. Please stop in again soon! |
