| JAPANESE BLACK PINE is an evergreen tree that grows to a height of 30 to 50 feet. Its wide-spreading branches have bright-green needles and cones 2 to 3 inches long. It is an ornamental tree for borders, screens and windbreaks on sandy areas inland and along the coast. It is considered the most useful evergreen tree for mid-Atlantic coastal areas. It grows 12 to 18 inches per year in medium-fertility, slightly acid, loamy and sandy soils. It has excellent drought tolerance but poor shade tolerance. Sun and moderately well drained soil if the best environment for the Japanese Black Pine. There's nothing quite like the Japanese Black Pine, but if you're looking for a substitute because of the scale insect problem in your area, you might try planting a Colorado Blue Spruce. It grows under the same conditions, but has blue-green foliage and a typical Christmas Tree shape. Home Depot generally carries a nice selection of evergreen trees, but you may want to phone local retailers to see what they have before visiting. Best wishes with your landscape! |
