What causes the leaves of an indoor pothos plant to suddenly turn yellow?

If the yellowing is restricted to just the older leaves, it's natural; if the yellowing occurs on both old and new leaves, it could indicate root rot, especially if the leaves turn bright yellow and begin wilting from the base outward.
