Heidi, That is one of the Japanese maples with very dissected foliage. There are several varieties so depending on the specific variety the average height and width should be about 10 feet. They like a bright shade with some morning sun. They prefer a well drained soil and mulching to protect the soil surface and deter weed competition. The boxwoods may be suffering from a fungus, bacterial leaf spot or damage from some chemical on the leaves. Sunburn is also a possibility especially if the damage is primarily on the sunny parts of the plant. I suggest you take a sample of the damage to your local County Extension Office to see if they can give a more specific identification and suggestions for a remedy. Thanks for the question.
