| Mimosa seeds can be harvested in the fall once they are fully mature (the seeds rattle inside the dried papery covering) and planted where you would like the tree to grow; they will overwinter outdoors naturally and then you would look for seedlings in the late spring. Or, you can save the seeds in a dry cool place and plant them in the spring. If you have a mimosa tree, you should be able to find many naturally occurring seedlings each spring if you look in nearby planting areas such as flower gardens or shrub beds. Tiny seedlings can be transplanted when only an inch or so tall. To transplant, take a large shovelfull of soil for each tiny plant. It is difficult to transplant larger mimosas because they have a deep and sparse root system. Good luck with your project! |
