Should a nikko blue hydraangea be cut back in fall or spring? |
Nikko Blue Hydrangeas produce flowers on new shoots which develop on old wood. It's best to prune your shrub back in the spring, just as the buds begin to swell on the stems. At that time you can prune away anything winter-damaged and reduce the length of the remaining branches down to 18-24" from ground level. This will provide plenty of room for each stem to produce new flowering shoots. Best wishes with your garden! |
