I live in northeast Tennessee. How close to the ground do I need to cut back my rose bushes before winter?

There are different methods of pruning roses depending on what kind of rose (climber, hybrid tea, landscape or shrub rose, etc.) you are growing, but none of them would be cut back in the fall. In late fall you would want to mulch over the root area, and if you have grafted hybrid tea roses you might need to add extra protection for the graft. This can be a mound of soil placed over the base of the shrub for the winter.
