We have a fairly small yard and don't want to plant traditional grass. We want a grass plant that will cover about 600 sq ft. Gets morning sun. I have seen something about walk on groundcovers. I believe it was a form of herb. It smells nice when you walk on it. Not sure.

We plan to do some beds around the grass/plant bed.

Judy,

Most of the groundcovers that are suitable as a grass replacement can't take much direct foot traffic. You will need to set stepping stones in the area and allow the groundcovers to grow around and in between them. Some groundcovers to consider that would offer some fragrance include:
thyme, oregano, and mint (can be invasive).
