The Q&A Archives: Gardenia Losing Buds

Question: Why do the buds fall off gardenia plants before they blossom?

Answer: Buds will fall off if the plant is stressed, from too much or too little water. Gardenia's don't like to compete with other plants, and they like morning dew on their leaves. You can help add humidity to the plant by misting it, or gently sprinkling it with water from the hose on summer mornings.
