Your website indicates that this species of bush is a partial to full sun variety -

the landscape architect I was working with had misinformed me then - that this could be planted in shade to mostly shade areas -

which is correct - are there variations of this species that can be in shade?

Mahonia, or Oregon Grape, is an adaptable plant that will grow in full sunshine to full shade as long as it is not a deep, dark shade. Mahonia is a terrific understory plant and grows best where it gets bright light - such as a place you might grow hosta or ferns. Hope this clarifies things for you!
