The Q&A Archives: oregon grape holly

Question: Your website indicates that this species of bush is a partial to full sun variety -

the landscape architect I was working with had misinformed me then - that this could be planted in shade to mostly shade areas -

which is correct - are there variations of this species that can be in shade?

Answer: Mahonia, or Oregon Grape, is an adaptable plant that will grow in full sunshine to full shade as long as it is not a deep, dark shade. Mahonia is a terrific understory plant and grows best where it gets bright light - such as a place you might grow hosta or ferns. Hope this clarifies things for you!
