The narrowness is the big challenge in such a planting area. You might try a clumping type of bamboo. Some of Monrovia's bamboo varieties that are clumping include:
BUDDHA'S BELLY BAMBOO (Bambusa ventricosa)
GOLDEN GODDESS BAMBOO (Bambusa multiplex ?Golden Goddess?)
PUNTING POLE BAMBOO (Bambusa tuldoides)
ALPHONSE KARR BAMBOO (Bambusa multiplex ?Alphonse Karr?)
There are some other plants that are quite narrow in growth habit:
SKY PENCIL JAPANESE HOLLY
Ilex crenata 'Sky Pencil'
Grows 6 to 8 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide.
Taxus x media 'Hicksii'
Slow grower to 10 to 12 feet tall, 3 to 4 feet wide, larger with age.
Juniperus virginiana 'Skyrocket' (J. scopulorum 'Skyrocket')
Fast grower to 15 to 20 feet tall, 2 to 3 feet wide.
There is also a narrow upright variety of yaupon called 'Will Fleming' that Monrovia does not sell but which may be available in your area.
