Why are the skins of the fruit from our Hachiya persimmon tree marred with black patches? The interior of the fruit appears not to be affected by the unattractive exterior color patches. Is there a way we can prevent the discoloration? The tree grows a half mile from the ocean.

The black blotches are caused by high humidity and there really isn't much you can do to control the humidity when you live close to the ocean. The blotches will cause the fruit to soften rapidly so be sure to use it as soon as it is ripe.
