| I have had a bigleaf hydrangea for 5 years. I planted it in spring 5 years ago and it bloomed that year but since then it has never bloomed. It gets healthy leaves and gets big but there are no blooms. It was also supposed to be blue, but the when it bloomed that one and only time it was pink. I live in zone 5, it gets afternoon sun withmorning shade and is watered heavily a few times a week in the summer/late spring/ early-mid fall time. Why is it not blooming and would it be better to move it to a spot that gets morning sun and afternoon shade next spring? |
| The most common reason for this hydrangea not to bloom is winter damage. These bloom on old wood that grew the previous year, so if winter kills back the plant then there will be few or no blooms. For the same reason, pruning in spring can limit or eliminate blooming. Many varieties are root hardy in zone 5 bit not stem hardy, so I suspect hardiness is the problem rather than siting or care.
