What is the best time of year to kill unwanted moss in high traffic areas that people might slip on?

The chemicals typically used to control moss in lawns and flower beds (iron) will stain sidewalks so I'd avoid using them. You can pressure spray to remove the moss, or use a product such as Simple Green to kill the moss - but you'll still need to scrub it with a broom and then wash it off. Simple Green is non-toxic to plants and it's what I use on my sidewalks. Wish there were an easier solution!
