The Q&A Archives: Chilean Mesquite

Question: Will the thornless chilean mesquite grow in Claremont Ca. I think it's zone 19. I'd like to put one in a narrow area between a block wall and driveway (4.5 feet widex 20 feet long) to shade the garage. Will it upheave the concrete? Remy.

Answer: Thornless Chilean Mesquite is not recommended for your gardening region. It thrives in Sunset zones 10-13 and 27-30, and your region is 19. Although it is hardy to 15F, which is lower than your lowest temperature, it needs a longer summer than your region can provide.
