To some extent your choices depend on whether the location is sunny or shady, and whether it is is just moist/damp or saturated/wet/standing water. Some plants you might consider would include red maple (Acer rubrum) and river birch (Betula nigra) along with Ilex glabra (evergreen inkberry holly), Ilex verticillata (deciduous holly), Aronia arbutifolia, and Cornus stolonifera. Your local professional nursery staff and county extension should be able to help you analyze the growing conditions where you want to plant, and suggest plants that would do well and thrive there. Based on a more detailed knowledge of the planting area and your design goals, they may have different suggestions. Good luck with your planting!
