| What plants are ideal for moist, shady locations? I am zone 5 ish. |
| There are many plants that would do well in moist soil in a shady area. Some of my favorites include the Silverbell tree(Halesia carolina) along with shrubs such as Clethra alnifolia, Itea virginica, in bright dappled light also add Viburnums along with yew, boxwood and possibly some of the hardier rhododendrons, and perennials such as ferns, hosta, pulmonaria, lamium, and ground covers such as Vinca minor, Lily of the Valley, pachysandra, Lobelia cardinalis, and Ligularia nummularia "Aurea". To some extent your selection depends on the type of soil you have as well as just how shady it is. Wind will also affect hardiess and moisture levels. I would suggest you work with your local professional nursery staff and/or county extension to determine more precisely what the growing conditions are and identify plants that will do there, then select the ones you like best from among those. In the summer, annuals such as impatiens, caladium and coleus love this type of spot. Enjoy your shade garden! |
