The Q&A Archives: Most popular vegetables to grow at home?

Question: What are the most popular vegetables for North American (or U.S.) gardeners to grow at home? Have certain vegetables become more or less popular to grow at home in the last 10 years?

Answer: Tomatoes and peppers are probably the most popular. Nearly every vegetable gardener will grow tomatoes unless their climate is unsuitable. Heirloom varieties have seen a resurgence in popularity as have Asian and other gourmet varieties and specialty greens. If you need detailed survey data you might wish to contact the National Gardening Association directly for specific research data.
