| This past summer I planted many Tropicanna Gold and other varieties of Canna. They grew like crazy and produced many flowers. Now that it is becoming winter here in Southern California, specifically Zone 19, is it best to cut back my Canna to the level of the soil or do I just let them be? They have stopped flowering and they are beginning to look really scraggly. I have seen your other responses to people whop live in frost zones but nothing that specifically addresses the non-frost zones such as So Cal. Also, any suggestions for fertilizer in the spring? | Your Tropicanna's will still need to be cut down, even if your area does not receive a hard winter frost. The best indication that they have stopped growing is when the temperatures begin to drop and their leaves begin to die. At this time, cut back the foliage to prepare the plant for a winter rest. You can fertilize after growth begins in the spring with a slow release 15-15-15 or 20-20-20. Glad you like our website! |
