Do the roots of Kwanzan trees grow to the surface or downwards? Will I be required to construct a root barrier around the tree? I intend to plant the tree 2 ft from my side walk and I am concerned it may cause damage.

Root systems vary but on most trees, including your cherry, the roots will be concentrated in the top 18-24" of soil and extend out nearly twice as far as the diameter of the tree's canopy. I think 2' from a sidewalk is much too close. As the tree matures, the roots will probably buckle the sidewalk. I'd find a roomier spot for the tree. Best wishes with your landscape.
