when is the proper time to trim back hibiscus in my area. My area is the Gulf Coast of Texas.

You can prune your hibiscus now, before new flower buds develop. As the growing season progresses you can prune back as soon as they've finished flowering. I pinch the tips of the stems out to keep the shrub dense and compact. Best wishes with your garden!
