| I want to plant a new island area in my yard this spring. I want a tree and some shrubs. I loved the White Fringe Tree and the Dwarf Fothergilla shrub to start with. I was also looking for a canadian hemlock tree but I'm afraid that it grows too fast and too big. Also I need to know what nurseries might carry these items. |
| Chionanthus virginicus is a lovely large shrub that can eventually reach the size of a small tree. It needs a humusy, organic, evenly moist but well drained soil to grow well. The Fothergilla needs similar soil conditions but in addition requires an acidic soil. With shade in the afternoon, it will tolerate soil that is average in moisture. In full sun all day, it really needs a wetter soil. Both of these are fairly slow growing, but you would want to space them far enough apart to allow for their mature size to develop. There are many different types of Fothergilla, but this is one of my favorites. http://www.mobot.org/gardening... The hemlocks do grow very large over the years; they are also currently under severe attack by a pest called the hemlock wooly adelgid, so I would not suggest planting one at this time even if you had enough space. I would suggest you work with your local county extension and professionally trained nursery staff to analyze the growing conditions where you want to put this island planting and identify some trees and shrubs that would thrive there as well as fit into the space you have available.
