The Q&A Archives: removal of star/asian jasmine

Question: I have an large area that is covered with jasmine and would like to place a dog run in that area using crushed granite or gravel. how can i remove or kill all of the jasmine? can i place crushed granite on top and smother it. thanks!

Answer: I suggest at least cutting back the jasmine flush to the ground and also pulling as much of the root system as possible first. If you soak the area with water a day or two in advance, the roots will be easier to pull. Then a layer of granite will be more effective. If any jasmine sprouts through the gravel, cut it back immediately. The goal is to "starve" the plant, by cutting off its ability to photosynthesize. If your dog(s) run up and down alot, they'll likely do it in anyway! Good luck!
