The area in front of my house is shaded by a live oak tree, and never get direct light. What type of shrub would grow well with little attention under these conditions in central Texas?

Shauna,

Your options are pretty limited in that much shade, especially since the live oak tends to hold its leaves almost all year long. Some choices to consider include Japanese aralia (Fatsia japonica), Japanese Aucuba and Gold Dust Plant (Aucuba japonica), and Sunrise Variegated Abelia (Abelia x grandiflora 'Sunrise').
