Digging up an old rock garden won't be an easy task! After removing the rocks, you'll probably find black plastic or weed barrier in the area (to suppress weeds) and that should be removed, as well. I renovated an old rock garden by laborously removing and piling up all the rocks, removing the black plastic, tilling the area to loosen and aerify the soil, adding some organic matter, digging it in to a depth of 8 inches, then leveling and planting the area. Additional organic mulch went around the new plants and then I bordered the bed with the original rocks. A few of the largest rocks were then laid in the new garden for added interest.

Best wishes with your project!
