| I'd use a commercially prepared potting soil rather than garden soil or packaged "top soil". Potting soil contains the right mixture of sand, peat and bark chips to help anchor the roots of your spruce, plus it drains quickly so you won't have to worry about the soil staying too wet and promoting root rot.
